The Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE) is going to open five new technological research and development facilities to external users from Brazil and abroad in 2015. Since the beggining of this year, the following laboratories received research proposals through the CNPEM’s Users Portal: Laboratory of Metabolomics (LabMet), Laboratory of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Laboratory of Macromolecule Analysis (LAM) and Laboratory of Bioprocess Development. Besides these facilities, the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery (BVS) is going to be available to the scientific community in the second half of the year.
These facilities join the Pilot Plant for Process Development (PPDP) and the Process Development Laboratories (LDP) that perform researches from external users since 2014.
CTBE’s planning and evaluation coordinator, Maria Juliana Calderan Rodrigues, explains that this action contributes to consolidate CTBE as a national laboratory renown in the bioenergy area. “We opened these facilities to external users considering that there are scientific areas which house sophisticated research equipment, as DNA sequencers and chromatographs, and that already have a high demand from the communities”, explains Rodrigues. The opening also contributes to the compliance of research goals agreed by CNPEM, through the management contract, along the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI).
New R&D facilities open to the research community
CTBE’s new open facilities to external research operate in continuous flow of proposals submitions over the year. To submit a research, the interested professional must have complete Ph. D. and register the information requested in the CNPEM’s Users Portal. Each proposal has its execution feasibility and relevance assessed by a CTBE’s committee setted for role.

Laboratory of Metabolomics (LabMet) – analyses cells chemical composition with the intention of obtain a general sight of cell functions, once it’s directly reflected with its physiological state. It’s considered a powerful tool by its capability of characterize and differentiate genotypes and phenotypes.
Laboratory of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) – two sophisticated sequencers, a HiSeq 2500 and a MiSeq, are available.
Laboratory of Bioprocess Development (LDB) – perform biotransformation processes based on enzymes or microorganisms and biomolecules recovery from micro to the laboratorial scale. Its main research focus is the development of ethanol production processes (first and second generation), chemical blocks and other metabolites of industrial interest from sugarcane.
Laboratory of Macromolecule Analysis – dedicated to the biochemical characterization and macromolecules biophysics, mainly related to the hydrolysis of biomass plant and biofuel production chain
Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery (VSB) – it is a computer simulation tool that allows technically evaluate new technologies in the sugarcane production chain, in three sustainability sectors: economic, environmental and social.
The new installations join the ones opened in 2014, which are:
Laboratory of Processes Development (LDP) – are equipped with reactors capable of processing lignocellulosic biomass and its derivatives for the conversion into cellulosic ethanol, chemical intermediates and other products. A wide range of physical-chemical processes are studied with the view of process validation and the development of new routes with the perspective of technology transfer.
Pilot Plant for Process Development – is used to verify and demonstrate, in a semi-industrial scale (300 liters), robustness and stability of technological routes for ethanol production and other compounds derived from biomass.
