Most of the scenarios evaluated using the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery platform are compared and/or integrated to first generation sugarcane facilities. These scenarios were defined based on the average Brazilian sugarcane mills and on the trends envisioned for sugar-energy sector.
The simulation of an industrial process, within the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery platform, is based on mass and energy balances carried out through process simulators, such as Aspen Plus, SuperPro and EMSO.
In order to simulate the industrial process, flowsheet, operational conditions and efficiencies must be defined and then included in the computational model. The definition of these parameters are of utmost importance for an appropriate representation of the industrial units. Besides, literature review, visit to industrial plants and consultation with specialists were conducted in order to represent the simulated sugarcane mills as close as possible to the actual ones.
This technical memorandum presents the description of the process steps commonly found in sugarcane mills as well as the parameters considered for process simulation. In addition, it also contains the technical results obtained for scenarios with first generation ethanol production using the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery.
